Bled | Slovenia: a jewel in the Alps
Nowhere in the world is there a more lovely place, than this paradise and its surroundings. In this way, the poet defines the glacial Lake Bled, situated among solitary mountains. The shore has been turned into a magnificent park with many villages, hotels.
Very popular is the medieval Castle of Bled on a cliff overlooking the lake. Today Bled is a modern holiday resort with many hotels, private accommodation facilities, a campsite, wellness centres, and a golf course. Besides cycling and golfing one can engage in more adrenaline sports.
Slovenia Travel: Lake Bled
Trips to the island of Bled are possible by the unique boats which are rowed in a standing position. Bled Lake is popular among rowers, for whom numerous rowing competitions are organized. It is renowned as a rowing and regatta center and as a starting point for numerous walks, tours, excursions and recreation trips.
The lake also attracts fishermen with fly fishing. In winter, the lake sometimes freezes and becomes a popular skating ring. In summer vacations there are many occasions to travel around, do some mountaineering or alpine climbing, rafting, playing tennis or just relaxing in the quiet woods.
Walk Around the Lake
Something you will certainly love about Lake Bled is that you can walk around the whole border of it. You will find sidewalks as well as a bridge like pathways all around it so that you can take pleasure in the view out of every angle of the lake.
Strolling the 3.5-mile lake circumference is pleasant, relaxing, and picturesque. At a relaxed pace, it takes approximately an hour and a half, not keeping track of halts to click photographs of the ever-changing view. As you go along, you’ll go by some very lovely villas, mainly from the early 1800s. The most important one is the Hotel Vila Bled.
For the more daring, hiking routes lead up into the hills all around the lake.
Take a Pletna boat to the Bled Island
Taking an old wooden Pletna boat to Slovenia’s biggest (and only) island in the center of the lake is a thing you can’t skip.
The boats originate back to 1590, and one Pletna can row a boat as much as 20 people. It’s a beautiful, unique experience and well worth the 10 to 15 Euros for a return trip.
The island’s major attractive force is the church. An eighth-century Slavic pagan temple focused on the goddess of love and fertility one time was standing here; the present Baroque variation (with Venetian flair-the bell tower is apart from the actual church) is the fifth to fill up this place.
Walk inside to find the rope for the church bell, hanging in the center of the church aisle right before the altar. A local superstition boasts that if you could get this bell to ring 3 times with one big draw of the rope, your dreams will come true. Definitely worth a check out – but be cautious if you’re light of construction, as the rope may take you for a ride.
Bled Castle
Bled Castle can be found on a high hill close to the end of Bled town, and it comes with a beautiful, impressive view of the entire lake, island, town, and mountains.
You can have a short walk up to the castle (caution: plenty of steep stairs involved!) and discover a little more about the historical past, take a look at the surroundings or simply take pleasure in the view.
The access to the castle costs 11 Euros for adults, 7 Euros for students and 5 Euros for children.
Bled’s cliff-hanging castle, dating in one variety or some other from 1,000 years ago, was the seat of the Austrian bishops of Brixen, who managed Bled in the Middle Ages. Currently, it’s an excellent tourist destination with a little historical background and many big views.
The many things at the castle – a reasonable history museum, a frescoed chapel, an old-fashioned printing press, and a wine cellar-are more pretty than appealing, but the real purpose of coming up here is to enjoy the capturing sceneries over Lake Bled and the neighboring mountainscapes.
